ADHD Food List: Feed Yourself So You Can Think

ADD and ADHD brains have strengths but they also have some unfavorable symptoms. They also need our nutritional support to run well. Even if you or your child have not been diagnosed, symptoms of ADD usually show up when:

1- Your brain is starving (it needs more nutrients to run well)

2- Your brain is inflamed from toxins in your environment and food

Let’s just tackle some foods for you to keep in mind to feed your brain. Some of these foods and supplements have been shown to reduce ADHD symptoms by 50% or more over the six months they included the foods. That is incredible! If it were a pill, it would fly off of the shelves.

The foods your brain needs are in two main categories, fat and protein.

Brain Food List

Protein

  • Chicken

  • Beef

  • Salmon (wild caught)

  • Sardines

  • Turkey

Protein is used by the body to make neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are how one brain cell talks to the next brain cell. Protein also helps control blood sugar spikes. When the blood sugar goes up and down in sharp waves this makes our brains behave more hyperactive and impulsive. Glucose hack: always have fiber and protein first and then eat carbohydrates.

All of the protein listed here needs to be from organic, free range animals, if possible. Why? Because if the animal you are eating is full of pesticides from its feed, you will be adding to your toxic load. If the animal is eating genetically modified feed or cheaply produced grains, the animal will be inflamed. And when you cook and eat the meat, that inflammation remains.

Fat

  • Organic, Plain Full-Fat Greek Yogurt- add coconut sugar, honey or maple syrup so that there are more minerals along with the sweet that gets added.

  • Omega 3- While this is a supplement, it is also a food. Omega 3 fatty acids help brain and nerve cell function. There have been many studies on omega-3 oil done and you have likely heard about them. What you may not know is what brand to choose. We have one we love above the rest, Carlson’s: The Very Finest Fish Oil (lemon flavor).

  • Organic Ghee or Organic, pasture raised Butter

  • Coconut Oil

  • Olive Oil (Organic)

  • Avocados

  • Organic Nuts and Seeds (the delicate oils are destroyed in roasting so eat these raw, or dehydrated if you like the crunch)

Without healthy fats we cannot easily absorb other necessary vitamins to heal. This is a great reason to use ghee or butter on all of your vegetables! Fat itself assists in proper brain function and is the building block of brain cells. Without enough fat cells in the brain lose their flexibility and don’t work well. Fat helps with both learning and memory. In addition, we need fat to maintain the protein-fat layer around our nerves (myelin sheath).

There is a list of foods that make the brain lower its ability to function well. Even if your brain is not wired physically like an ADD or ADHD brain, it will function with similar unfavorable symptoms if you eat those foods.

Do You Know The Basics?

Food is the medicine of the future. You must have a very basic understanding of what heals and what destroys or you will be at the mercy of synthetic drugs and overnight solutions—that never heal and restore your body.

The answer is: eat the right foods, and eliminate the food that and robs your body of its nutritional stores.

Then over days, weeks, months and years you will find your health restored to you.

And if you have the vision of being radiantly well and raising children that defy current statistics, the only thing you need to know are the basics.

I can teach them to you.

After reading hundreds of books, research and health articles and spending thousands on the best of medicine and alternative medicine, it comes down to a few basic truths.

When I see what the every day magic of food can do for children it lights me up. It is one of my favorite things to talk about and teach about.
